Carnaval 2012 in Batalha

Evenals in voorgaande jaren was het gisteren weer tijd voor de Carnavalsoptocht in Batalha. Op zich misschien geen bruisend gebeuren zoals in Rio de Janeiro of dichterbij zoals hier in Portugal in Torres Vedras. Maar dat er door de lokale bevolking veel energie en tijd ingestoken is, is duidelijk. Aan belangstelling gelukkig ook geen gebrek…………..het centrum was volgelopen met bezoekers uit de regio.

In de optocht veel schoolkindertjes als indiaantjes, afrikaantjes, mexicaantjes, maar ook een kritisch noot richting de president en de regering met betrekking tot de crises. Ook is duidelijk dat veel Portugezen het niet eens zijn met de aanwezigheid van de Loja Chinesa! Winkels die gerund worden door chinezen met producten uit China. Producten uit China vinden ze geen probleem. Het feit dat de zaken gerund worden door de chinezen en onduidelijk is hoe de afdracht van belasting verloopt, ligt gevoeliger. Dus ook daar het nodige commentaar op!

En ook Portugal heeft programma’s als Obese of XXL. Dus ook hier de nodige aandacht voor met zwoegende tieners verhult in schuimrubber pakken!

Al met al een kleurige optocht die de moeite waard was.

Van nachtvorst tot zonnebrand!

Vrijdag op zaterdagnacht………..flinke nachtvorst hier in Portugal, zo rond de -4. ‘s Morgens zit er een dikke laag ijs op de voorruit van de auto. Gelukkig koesteren we hier een zachte winter en heeft de zon het ijs al snel doen smelten. Zo rond het middaguur zit ons werk er op. We drinken koffie op het terras. De temperatuur achter op het terras is zo een 10 graden hoger dan de temperatuur aan de voorkant van het huis. Onze gasten zaten al lekker buiten op het terras, maar zijn ‘verdwenen’. De auto staat er nog, dus concluderen wij dat ze wellicht te voet op pad zijn gegaan. Niets blijkt minder waar! Ze waren even naar binnen gegaan omdat het te warm werd in de zon! We drinken gezamenlijk koffie, toch maar buiten in de zon. Maar na een uur besluiten we dat we een parasol en zonnebrandcreme nodig hebben om niet te verbranden: uiteindelijk gaan we allemaal op pad. Wij rijden richting de badplaats Foz do Arelho. Lang geleden dat we daar geweest zijn. Inmiddels is er het nodige veranderd en zien we dat de lagune met zand wordt opgespoten. De reden is ons (nog) onduidelijk! De strandtenten zijn er nog wel allemaal en zijn goed bezet. Ook wij zoeken hier het terras op en genieten van de zon, elkaar en een drankje! Terug naar huis kiezen we voor de weg langs de kust tot São Martinho do Porto!

Muziek in Portugal

Wie Fado zegt, komt absoluut in Portugal uit!

Fado is de volksmuziek van Portugal. Het is het Portugese levenslied dat meer dan 150 jaar terug zijn oorsprong vond in dit land. Waar, daar zijn de meningen over verdeeld. Volgens de een in Coimbra maar volgens de ander in Lissabon. Zeker is in elk geval dat het is ontstaan in de arme wijken, waar je naast de geroosterde sardientjes en de bacalhau, ook de armoede rook.

Fado gaat over het leven, over verdriet, liefde en haat, de blijdschap en de vergankelijkheid: alles wat er op het levenspad van de Portugezen kwam en komt!

Het woord fado betekent letterlijk ‘lot’. Het geeft uitdrukking aan het verdriet en het verlangen naar verloren tijden. Het is vandaag de dag nog steeds onderdeel van het leven van de Portugese bevolking. De fado wordt net zo vaak door vrouwen als door mannen gezongen en altijd begeleid door de guitarra en een akoestische Spaanse gitaar (viola).

In Lissabon en Coimbra zijn diverse fadohuizen waar ’s avonds wordt opgetreden door fadozangers en –zangeressen. De fado in Coimbra is luchtiger dan de stijl uit Lissabon en werd bekend als de muziek van de studenten, Fado de Estudant. In Lissabon is met name de oude wijk Alfama bekend om haar fadohuizen welke door de fadistas (fadozangers) zelf worden gerund. Een goed en bekend huis is Parreirinha de Amalfa. Hier geniet u van lekker eten en goede wijn en muziek.

Vertolkers van fado Portugal

Het levenslied is hier in Portugal nog steeds zeer geliefd en kreeg na het overlijden van Amália Rodrigues (1921-1999), ook internationaal meer bekendheid bij een groter publiek.

Zij is de meest bekende fado zangeres en beter bekend als ‘koningin van de fado’. Volgens velen is zij de belangrijkste persoon geweest in de ontwikkeling van de fado. Zelf kwam zij van oorsprong uit Lissabon waar ze in armoede is opgegroeid. In de periode waarin wij op onderzoek waren naar ons nieuwe bestaan hier in Portugal kochten wij een CD van deze bekende zangeres. Wat heeft een mens dan weinig nodig: een beetje zon, een terrasje, glaasje wijn en de CD van Amalia Rodrigues op de achtergrond. Je waant je zo in Portugal…………

Central Portugal, an area with plenty to do! Besides culture, golf and beach, you can also enjoy walking. You walk through olive groves and vineyards, Portuguese houses, coastal or limestone landscape, but a walk through Coimbra and Obidos is also possible. These walks and many others, are for you in Casa Ceedina for free.

 Walking in the heart of Portugal: Natural Serra d’Aire e Candeeiros

In the Serra d’Aire e Candeeiros are many hiking trails. The distances and difficulty vary walk. The park is extracted limestone used for sidewalks, decorative stone and raw material for cement industry

On the east side of the park in 1994 were footprints of dinosaurs found in a total of 20 tracks revealed, where you can walk. At various places in the park you can visit caves. The park has a beautiful landscape with lots of olive trees, spectacular valleys and deep ravines.

Through the park you will find the old windmills, some restored, others neglected. Modern windmills are also along the edge of the park.

City walk in Coimbra (5 km)

An hour’s drive from Casa Ceedina is the university city of Coimbra. The walk that we have for you, takes you through narrow streets, squares and the covered market. With the elevator (Elevador do Mercado) you go to the university area. There are about 22,000 students and eight facultities. Tourists and students walking by and with each other in this part of town. The library in Coimbra is one of the highlights of this section. From the University area you walk through the botanical garden and with a little luck you will get a private tour of the Orangerie.

Walking in Nazare-Sítio-Pederneira (9 km)

A nice walk through the bad-/visserijplaats. In the 17th century Pederneira an important port for the transport of conifers from Leiria to the port of Lisbon, today it consists of a few small streets! Nazare has over time become an old fishing village into one of the major resorts in Portugal. Although the beach fishing is gone, there is still a fish drying spot on the beach.

Walking from Casa Ceedina

You also can! So you can walk directly from the B & B into the hills, on small roads through the area. You walk past Portuguese houses, olive groves and vineyards. Or to the town of Batalha, the route runs alongside the vineyards down and is about 1.8 km.

Christmas in Batalha

Every year in November began the decoration of Batalha for Christmas. At all roundabouts are beautiful decorations made ​​and if you come to Batalha from the IC2 you see the beautiful crib. On the square at the abbey is a tree of lights! In the evening after dark and the lights come on, it’s a fantastic sight.

In this period, all kinds of activities are organized for all ages. On Sunday, December 11th was in the Abbey a beautiful Christmas concert. For the children there was a Santa Claus or children could ride on a pony.
